Troops of the Nigerian Army are reportedly responding to a terror attack on the garrison town of Banki in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria near the border with Cameroon.

Dandal Kura Radio International is monitoring the unfolding attack and security situation in Banki.

The details of the attack are not clear yet as of the time of filing this report.

Banki used to be within the area of influence of Boko Haram, the parent faction of Islamic State West Africa Province.

However, the recent overrunning of the Boko Haram stronghold of Sambisa by ISWAP and the absortion of fighters could mean Banki and other areas face the risk of ISWAP attacks.

A town under Bama Local Government Authority, Banki is about 61 kilometers from the headquarters, Bama, and 135 kilometres from the state capital Maiduguri.

The once-thriving cross-border trade town is a crucial centre for humanitarian interventions and support for people in the area affected by the violent insurgency.

Sundays incident comes days after Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State and the United Nations hosted a high-level delegation of key partners in Banki.
