The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control has drawn attention to a counterfeit drug in circulation.

The drug is Augmentin 625mg, which is a common antibiotic used to treat many bacterial infections.

A memo by the agency dated October 15 and seen by Dandal Kura Radio on Sunday, noting that the counterfeit drug’s supply came from Onitsha, Anambra State and was distributed to various patent medicine vendors across the country.

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been informed of the circulation of suspected counterfert Augmentin 625mg tabs in the country.

The information revealed that the supply came from Onitsha, Anambra State, and was distributed to patent medicine vendor licensed operators in the zone.

The agency gave a description on how to detect the counterfeit version of the drug as follows: Product Name: Augmentin 625mg Batch No.: 562626 Manufacturing date: April 2021 Expiry date: April 2024 NAFDAC Reg No: 04-1928
NAFDAC also pointed out other labeling inconsistencies in the counterfeit versions’ packages.

It has no inscription “manufactured by”, but only the address, which is inconsistent with usual labeling standards. Adding that the way in which the manufacturing and expiry dates were written were also not consistent with acceptable format.

It also does not have a “MAS sratch number” which are normally placed for verification, while the logo of GSK was irregularly positioned as can be found in the original.
