Usman Alkali Baba, the Nigerian Inspector-General of Police has launched a new special security action plan, “OPERATION RP” in the South-south region of the country amidst growing security concerns.

The special operation was flagged off at the Sharks Football Stadium, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Wednesday, May 19.

The IGP noted that it was a continuation of the implementation process of the special operation in the country.

During the launch, Baba condemned the increased cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, economic sabotage, and other threats to public safety bedevilling the region.

These crimes, the IGP said, were in addition to a series of violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the region.

He, however, expressed belief that the new special operation action plan would reorder and stabilise security in the South-south, as officers deployed for the operation have been charged to courageously and fiercely defend themselves and innocent citizens.

Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State Governor, represented by Ipalibo Banigo, his deputy, affirmed the zero tolerance of the state government to criminality in the state.

He commended the IGP for the initiative and pledged support of the State Government to the success of “Operation Restore Peace” in the state, the South-south region and the country at large.

Attacks on police officers and facilities in the Southeast and South-south have been on the rise in recent times.

The most recent attack on a Nsukwa Police Divisional Headquarters, Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State South-south, left three police officers dead.
