The National Cotton Association of Nigeria has said that the Anchor Borrowers Programme, launched by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, is about the best agricultural programme so far introduced in Nigeria.
The President of the association Mr Anibe Achimugu disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja said the programme was a game changer in the agriculture sector.
The programme is being pursued and implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria in partnership with Commodity Associations while carrying the entire value chain along, increased productivity is guaranteed.
The association’s president, who is also the Managing Director of Arewa Cotton, said farmers were also encouraged with exact quantities of inputs required, training and insurance as well as extension services.
According to him, farmers are comfortable to cultivate the crops because they know that there is a market at the end of the day.
He said expectations were high for cotton products far in excess of what was produced in 2019.
Achimugu also said that the CBN had achieved a milestone by linking the uniformed services made up of the army, navy, air force and the paramilitary into the programme.
He noted that the uniformed services now source fabrics for their uniforms directly from Nigerian cotton.
