Adamawa State Government, ICRC Distributes Hybrid Maize Seeds In Local Governments

Adamawa State Government in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross has flagged off distribution of hybrid maize seeds in four selected communities in Yola South, Hong, Girei and Numan Local government areas.

The Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Umar Iya Daware while speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at Mbamba in Yola South, said the move was part of the plan of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to take agriculture to greater heights.

He said the Government is making efforts to modernise agricultural production, processing, storage and distribution through the introduction of Adamawa Agribusiness Support Programme so that the sector can be more responsive to the demands of development. 

He also said the production of quality crops depended on quality seeds, the beneficiaries should make judicious use of the seeds to produce more food for the state and Nigeria as a whole, Daware said.

He appreciated the efforts of the Red Cross in mitigating the effects of insurgency which brought a lot of setbacks in the economy and the lives of the people.

In her remark, the official of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Madam Zara Aljanabi said the seedlings are to be distributed free of charge in the benefiting communities stressing that the seed are treated with chemicals and should not be use in preparing meals.

Ardo Aminu Mbamba, Village Head of Mbamba in his speech, saluted the state government and the Red Cross for their determination to ensure food security by donating the hybrid seedlings adding that it will go a long way in enhancing productivity of farmers.
